What is Emotet?

An Emotet is a banking Trojan that functions as a downloader or 'dropper' of other malware. It is primarily distributed through malicious spam and phishing emails. After it has infected one system, it will utilize the victim's hijacked email account to send malicious emails out to the victim's contact list, since people are more likely to open attachments and click on links from people they know. This unfortunately means that virtually anyone could become a victim of Emotet.

What you can do to protect yourself:

  • Be sure to regularly update your system

  • Be careful when opening attachments or clicking links from familiar addresses. It is always proactive to check with the sender to verify they were the ones who sent the attachment/link. Never open attachments or click on links that are from senders you do not recognize.

  • Use strong passwords and never use the same password across accounts.

  • Use two-factor or multi-factor authentication for your accounts

If you happen to get infected by Emotet, here are some things you can do to remove it:

  • If your computer is connected to a network, isolate the infected system

  • Patch and clean the infected system

  • Clean each computer one at a time that is on your network
